RED SMITH

Red brings a battle tested 40 years of leadership and entrepreneurial energy to Sun FireDefense where he most enjoys turning innovation into market success and satisfied Customers.

Red learned early in his career at Pacific Bell that it was important to always speak with data, and that sound decision making was based on facts not emotion. He credits Glenn Anderson and Lowell McAdam for shaping his skills to not only delight Customers but to also deliver expected financial performance. Since that first decade of Fortune 100 employment, Red has taken a more entrepreneurial path through Silicon Valley. He was privileged to earn his first executive position at Entex Information Services where Dave Csira taught him how to successfully run a business unit with full profit and loss responsibilities. After Entex, Red joined his first true start up, Callisma, which was funded by Sequoia Capital and Cisco Systems (and subsequently acquired by AT&T).  After Callisma, Red joined a longtime Pacific Bell colleague, Larry Henry, to raise venture capital and private equity to launch ContainerTrac, an IT/Engineering company helping to automate the container inventorying function at global seaport terminals. After 12 years of belly crawling through broken glass, under the sage wisdom and guidance of the company’s Chairman, Nate Bell, ContainerTrac was acquired in 2013.

Red then enjoyed 5 years at Kirsen Technologies (a leader in location-based and integrated sensor solutions) alongside his business partner, Kirill Mostov.  For the last 2 of those 5 years, Kirsen expanded its technology reach by entering the emerging electric scooter market (think Bird and Lime) by launching a more intelligent scooter platform with Clevr Mobility. Clevr achieved significant early success but, regrettably, the company was shuttered during the Covid global pandemic. Prior to Sun FireDefense, Red’s most recent assignment was a corporate turnaround at Pixel Health, an IT managed services firm supporting hospitals and physician groups. At Pixel Health, Red had an outstanding and dedicated team of technical professionals and managers which enabled the company to improve service levels and earn its first ever profit. Red is especially proud of his work with Gerry Gosselin to create and evolve an exceptional, cloud-based performance reporting and analytics platform using Microsoft Azure and Fabric to better speak with data.

Red has been married for 40 years, and he and his wife have 4 adult children.  Red is a sports enthusiast, and his passion is coaching youth baseball.  Red earned an MBA from UC Berkeley and a BS in Finance from the University of Southern California.  Red has been a Board Member and Advisor for many companies, and he super enjoys helping entrepreneurs achieve their goals.  Red meets monthly as a member of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business CEO Forum and, in addition to his family and other professional activities, Red was privileged to be a member of Rotary International for a decade where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.
